I started studying ESOL entry 3 and now I am doing ESOL Level 1.  When I was in Syria, I studied history and taught in secondary schools.  I brought my qualifications to the United Kingdom to try and get a job, but my qualifications weren’t as useful as they were back home.

My time is mostly spent taking care of my 3 children.  When I joined the classes, my youngest child was not at school, so FACES helped me to get funding for my child to attend a nursery while I attended my course.  I my child was safe while I studied which was important to me. Any choices I make for myself can be challenging because my husband has had to move to another city to pursue his career in medicine.  I found the course through a worker at Zest.  She described to me the different courses and how they can benefit me in different ways. The course was far away from my house so I learned to drive to remove that barrier because I could not get to class and get home on time for my children when they got back from school.

The course has made a positive impact on me, it also gives me more confidence, I now speak to other English-speaking people and understand them, but I was scared to speak to other people before. Now I am motivated to thrive and learn more.

I would advise other students to not give up on their learning, they also have to think about themselves not just about other people. I have responsibility to look after my children the best way I can and this is only possible if I am a role model.

What are you going to do after you finish your course?

I would like to complete functional skills exams if I pass my level 1 reading exam.
